We’re coming out of a time period that has featured so much stress and conflict. How do we reconnect in community when we’re so primed for offense? How do we govern our reactions in a culture increasingly given to snappy comebacks?
As Christians, our guiding principles come straight from Scripture which is extremely clear about how to deal with both offenses done to us and those that we commit. First and foremost, we take it to God. If we’re still offended, we discuss it with the person concerned, then with another present if that conversation proves fruitless (Matthew 18:15-17).
But of utmost importance is our understanding of just how much we’ve been forgiven for the countless times we stumble and hurt others in the process.
And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.
Mark 11:25 (NIV)
